If you are tired of flimsy flip flops for outdoor adventure, a new sandal brand may have the right athletic outdoor sandal dialed for you—literally. Teva and Keen may have a new challenger.

Rethinking the Outdoor Adventure Sandal

Amento CEO Ryan Erickson sent RYK a pair of the innovative Wingra sandals (women’s and men’s) to test (thank you Ryan!), and several features immediately set the Wingra apart from any sandal we’ve seen or tried:

Dial Closing: Fast Twist Closure System (FTCS)

The most surprising feature? Instead of basic straps, Amento uses a closure similar to what cyclists know as a “BOA” system—a dial that provides micro-adjustable fit by cinching when the dial is turned. Combined with two hook-and-loop velcro straps, it’s possible to achieve a snug and comfortable fit thanks to three points of control and no uncomfortable rubber post between the toes.

It takes some experimenting to figure out the quarter-turn release mechanism on the closure dial, but once learned, adjustments are straightforward.

A Carbon Plate in the Sole

The next unique feature is a carbon fiber plate embedded in the sole—something usually reserved for running shoes. At 7.5 ounces for a size 7, they’re incredibly light, yet the plate adds structure and support that most sandals lack.

The Materials are Also Notable

The EVA topsole and KenFoam midsole have a Hoka-like vibe with their generous bulk and cushion. The upper materials shed water quickly, while the micro-suede lining inside keeps things comfortable against the skin.

How the Wingra Sandals Performed in Water

Wading through a creek and a river, the deep lugs on the rubber outsole gripped wet rocks well and no pebbles or debris worked their way into the sandals. Surely, debris could get into a sandal, but none got into the Wingras during testing. 😊

The carbon plate was helpful in the water as well. Instead of feeling every sharp rock through a flimsy sole, there was plenty of protection and cushion to move confidently over river rocks which cause barefoot waders to move gingerly. The sandals stayed locked in place throughout creek walking, with no need to stop and readjust.

The Wingra sandals dry quickly. Within minutes of leaving the water, the uppers had shed most moisture, making the transition to dry trails comfortable rather than squishy.

Wingra Performance Beyond the Water

On dry ground, the Wingra continued to impress. The EVA and KenFoam midsole combination delivers cushioning without the disconnected, marshmallow-like feel of overly soft shoes and the forefoot is wide for a natural toe splay.

Secure fit really shines on uneven terrain. Whether climbing over rocks or navigating loose gravel, feet stay planted in the sandals. No sliding forward on descents, no lateral movement on off-camber sections—just stable, confident steps.

Style Considerations

Function takes priority over fashion in Wingra’s design, as the aesthetic is fine but not exactly stylish, given the protruding dial closure. The utility of the sandal and pleasant colorways reflect purpose-driven choices: every element serves terrain, traction, or comfort above all. Over time, the pragmatic look tends to grow on outdoor-minded users, at least it did for our tester, Hanna.

Innovation from a Small Brand

Amento’s Wingra model is like a collection of bold experiments: embedding a carbon fiber plate in a sandal sole, adopting a micro-adjustable dial closure usually seen in cycling or trail shoes, and giving a Hoka-like foam ride. Such choices signal a willingness to push conventions rather than follow them.

Other initial offerings from Amento such as the Martlett (women’s and men’s), offer similar features including a nice merlot color for women.

Ideal Use Cases

Testing indicates Wingra excels in several scenarios:

  1. Water-Centric Adventures
    • Creek or river crossings, beach days, kayaking, paddleboarding: quick-dry materials plus debris resistance and reliable outsole grip make transitions seamless.
  2. Light Trail & Camp Footwear
    • Moderate hiking routes and campsite wear benefit from underfoot protection of the carbon plate and the secure fit system, while keeping weight low.
  3. Travel & Packability
    • Feather-light construction (around 7–7.5 oz per sandal) and durable build suit varied trip itineraries: urban strolls, outdoor side trips, water activities—all in one pair.
  4. Early-Adopter Enthusiasts
    • Those who enjoy supporting nimble brands and providing hands-on feedback will appreciate the opportunity to influence future Wingra iterations.

Verdict & Rating

The Wingra sits solidly between flimsy flip-flops and bulky water shoes. The combination of traction, support, adjustability, and quick-dry behavior earns a high mark. Styling remains pragmatic rather than flashy; for those prioritizing function on summer adventures (paddling, hiking, beach days, camp life), Wingra delivers exactly what’s needed.
